Abstract
The quality of political leadership in any country is one of the determinants contributing to or undermining the country’s environmental sustainability. In Africa, climate-induced conditions compromise states’ sustainability. Whereas Kenya is well-known for its efforts to enhance sustainability, less is known of the role of Kenya’s political leadership in these efforts. Therefore, this contribution focuses specifically on a neglected area in leadership studies on Africa, namely, the role of the First Lady (i.e., the wife of the President). Kenya’s First Lady, Margaret Gakuo Kenyatta’s role in environmental sustainability in Kenya is unprecedented and instructive vis-à-vis sustainability in the country and on the continent.
