Abstract

Intra-articular injections of the ankle can be performed to treat a variety of pathological conditions. The drugs administered in these cases may be anti-inflammatory agents or viscosupplements. Anesthetic drugs can be injected for diagnostic purposes in the differential diagnosis between intra- and extra-articular pathologies.

In this chapter, the injection procedures for tibio-talar, subtalar, and talonavicular joints are reviewed.

The technical principles and injection techniques used for diagnostic or therapeutic reason are discussed including injection approach, choice of equipment, quantity of pharmaceuticals, and appropriate aftercare, as well as possible procedure-related symptoms.
