Abstract
Dark-skinned populations, characterized by increased epidermal melanin and reactive fibroblast responses, pose special challenges for the use of laser- and light-based therapies. Although laser technology has improved in the past years, not all procedures are safe for treating patients with dark skin complexion. The development of new lasers that use longer wavelengths with increased pulse durations, expanded range of treatment fluencies, and more efficient cooling devices decreases the likelihood of adverse events while effectively treating darker skin types. Therefore, although difficult, effective laser therapy in patients with darker skin phototypes can be achieved.
