Girls as Members of an Educated Elite: The Bulgarian Case, c. 1850–1950

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

Through a prosopographical analysis, the chapter examines the formation of an educated girlhood during the period when the new independent state of Bulgaria was being created. The focus is on graduates of female high schools in Bulgaria from 1850 to 1950. The chapter explores the social role of the girls as members of Bulgaria’s educated elite and their influence on the cultural modernisation of society, particularly in the context of the newly formed, independent Bulgarian state. In addition to a prosopographical analysis, statistical analysis, social network analysis, and case studies are used to explore the establishment, selection, and functioning of a female educated elite in Bulgaria over a long period.
