Abstract
Peri-implant disease develops silently, and often it is diagnosed when bone loss has already occurred. The prevalence of peri-implantitis in the literature is overestimated but it does occur. It is an unpredictable disease to treat and practitioners should make every effort to prevent its occurrence if possible. This is best achieved through a personalized approach to both home care and office hygiene visits, whose duration and frequency should be determined according to the individual patient’s need. The objective of an effective dental implant maintenance program is to recognize early signs of inflammation and peri-implant mucositis, and be able to reverse it back to health.
