Leiomyosarcoma of the Nipple-Areola Complex

Abstract

Breast leiomyosarcoma is believed to originate from the smooth muscle cells of the vascular walls in the mammary parenchyma, and in the nipple it might originate from the smooth muscle bundles that surround the lactiferous ducts and the arrector pili muscle, with a sarcomatous change from a leiomyoma or other spindle cell tumors. The author discusses clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Adequate and prolonged follow-up has to be carried out in all cases, and if adjuvant therapy has been used, the possibility of secondary neoplasms has to be taken into account.
