Achieving Sustainable E-Government in Pacific Island States

Part of the book series: Public Administration and Information Technology ((PAIT,volume 27))

Abstract

This chapter outlines how Information Communication Technology (ICT) in education supports and facilitates the processes of e-government. ICT education , its use in teaching and learning and for enhancing education administration and governance , are pivotal components in regional and national development for the small island developing states of the Pacific. The identification and discussion of various issues and challenges which have hindered the effective utilization of ICT in education in the Pacific region provides a reality check. At the same time, it suggests a way forward for major initiatives grounded in the context of small islands where a growing dependence on the knowledge economy is increasingly facilitated by ICT capability. Progress in different countries of the Pacific region and the reasons underlying varying rates of development particular to each country are also noted together with outside support from various sources. Sound planning, appropriate education and training, together with enabling and well informed partners and policies can make a difference to progress and the sustainability of such developments.
