Advanced Colonoscopy and Endoluminal Surgery

Abstract

Self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) have become, an alternative to surgery and an important addition to the treatment of colonic obstruction in the last two decades. Emergency surgery in patients with colonic obstruction is associated with significant morbidity and mortality rates. Endoluminal colonic stenting can be performed as palliation or as a bridge to future surgical intervention; however, its oncologic safety remains uncertain. There is limited data regarding stenting for benign colonic obstruction.
