Urogenital Fetal Imaging: US and MRI

Abstract

The issue of prenatal diagnosis is to depict fetal malformation that could affect the prognosis of the pregnancy, the outcome of the fetus and/or the management of the newborn. Ultrasound has become routine components for the care of a pregnant woman and MRI is used as a complementary imaging modality in selected cases. The genito-urinary tract is easily depicted in the fetus and congenital abnormalities of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT) represent the most frequently encountered malformations. They can affect the renal parenchyma, the urinary tract (renal cavities, ureters, bladder, urethra) very early in the fetal development and lead to chronic renal failure in early childhood. They represent the largest group of congenital anomalies leading to neonatal and pediatric care. The aim of urogenital fetal imaging detailed in this chapter for various normal and pathological situations is to entail a better management of these patients pre- and post-natally.
