Abstract

Anatomic diagnosis pre-main repair: The repair of anorectal malformation should not be a surgical exploration or a surgical misadventure. It is supposed to be a well-planned procedure based on an accurate anatomic diagnosis. In order to achieve that, it is important to perform technically correct imaging procedures. The “high-pressure distal colostogram” is the most valuable and important diagnostic study in the management of anorectal malformations. A detailed description of this procedure with adequate images as well as an animation will illustrate this extremely important diagnostic test.

In this chapter, the authors also describe the value of ultrasound studies of the female pelvic anatomy during the neonatal period. The value of the MRI studies, particularly in patients already operated, is discussed, and special space is dedicated to describe an extremely valuable, modern imaging procedure called “3D rotational scan” that is extremely helpful in the management of complex cloacal malformations.
