Abstract

This chapter broaches a huge subject, and can only touch on a few of the ways in which music culture was influenced by science fiction in the last decades of the 20th century. We take a brief look at some of the rock musicians who took inspiration from SF—and, maybe less well known, a couple of operas too. Then there’s the fascinating, if improbable-sounding, subject of those musicians, from Stockhausen to Sun Ra, who claimed to have an extraterrestrial connection (or, in the case of Rosemary Brown, a ghostly one). Finally we look at a handful of SF authors, such as Michael Moorcock and Somtow Sucharitkul, who have been equally productive in the music field.
