Abstract
Before the 1970s, treatment of recurrent PSVT with or without the WPW syndrome consisted of lifelong drug therapy. The few drugs that were available were ineffective or associated with side effects. In this chapter, the author discusses the long and tortuous road in conquering PSVT, which began with surgical ablation of accessory pathways in patients with the WPW syndrome, followed by catheter ablation of the AV junction with D/C current in patients with atrial fibrillation, and subsequently, ablation of overt and concealed accessory pathways and the fast and slow pathways in AV nodal reentrant tachycardia utilizing radiofrequency current, and the pioneers behind these spectacular developments.
