Abstract
Syncope/Collapse is a common syndrome in the general population caused by various etiologies. Given the often, complex presentations, there is a wide variability in the management of patients with syncope/collapse resulting in significant differences in outcome and high cost burden. Syncope units (SUs) have been developed with the intent of ensuring a systematic approach toward the evaluation of patients with transient loss of consciousness from risk stratification to diagnosis, therapy, and follow-up. Several studies have shown that SUs improve the rate of diagnosis and decrease rates of admissions and unnecessary tests utilization. The ideal SU should have resources for interdisciplinary testing and consultations available in a timely manner. In this chapter, we discuss the several models of successful SUs available in addition to future perspectives in addressing this ongoing challenge.
