Abstract

Normal, Illinois is a small midwestern town within the United States approximately 200 km south of Chicago. Most people who live in Normal nod their head to the improbable name, sometimes wearing printed shirts that say, “I’m completely Normal!” What many do not realize, however, is that the name “Normal,” like many towns and cities in the Midwest United States, is derived directly from the French language from the time when the first French trappers explored North America in the mid-16th century.
