Abstract
The Romantic author is seen as unique for his active involvement in self-fashioning of the authorial persona. The chapter asserts that the Romantic author was more than ever before self-aware: (a) of their relationship to the other artist(s) whether it be their contemporary or a predecessor; (b) of their own subjectivity and public presence; and (c) of their own disappearance and death. The chapter covers a range of aspects that have shaped the modern notion of the author: the emergence of the culture public sphere and the author as a public figure; the focus on the biographical legend and the theatricality of the authorial persona, the author performing the self and last but not least, the role of gender as the notion of the ‘other author’.
