Abstract
In this chapter, a brief introduction is made, in which the four historical ages into which the entire history of the gears is divided are defined. The fact that the gears are to be considered artificial mechanisms conceived by the technological man, understood as a human already become able to conceive and manufacture artificial mechanisms to be used for his daily needs, is then clarified. Finally, a surprising curiosity is highlighted, concerning a very recent discovery of a unidirectional biological gear in a planthopper species insect, widespread in many European gardens. However, it is shown that this discovery does not invalidate the general consideration of gears as artificial mechanisms.
