Abstract

Scalar diffraction theories of monochromatic light are discussed for free space propagation that are very important in computer holography. Important formulas and ideas such as the angular spectrum, Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction and the Fourier transform by a lens are introduced as preliminary to the techniques of the numerical field propagation discussed in Chaps. 6, 9, and 12. Thus the equations presented in this chapter are often referred to in the following chapters.
