Abstract
This chapter presents a very short history of sol-gel processing. Gels, sols, and gelation are defined. An outline and a general scheme of sol-gel processing are presented. A few words are given regarding the applications of this class of materials, as well as its advantages and limitations. Finally the general organization of this book is summarized.
