Abstract
The second film of Mai’s trilogy of war as lived by children is Children of Shatila (1989). The film is set in the most iconic Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut—a site of potent collective memory for all Palestinians. Through the eyes and voices of children, the life of the camp—more than a decade after the 1982 massacre—is revealed with an intimacy never seen before. The children film each other and the stories of their family and community history on digital cameras given to them by Mai. These scenes are a link to the historic films made by the Palestine Cinema Institute decades before and the devastating loss of the entire archive following the Israeli invasion of 1982.
