Abstract
Originally published as the introduction to Sense and Significance (Pittsburgh, PA: Duquesne University Press, 1973), this chapter is an early look into guiding principles that have shaped my intellectual trajectory. It explains my decision to use phenomenology as my departure point, while also indicating my openness to the pragmatist tradition. Over the course of my career, I have weaved these two traditions together in the development of postphenomenology, the intellectual innovation for which I am best known.
