Abstract
Antiretroviral treatment (ART) has dramatically increased the life expectancy of people living with HIV, with significant decreases in the HIV-associated mortality in all age groups. While there is still more work to be done in improving access to ART in key populations, clinical care of HIV infected children and adolescents is shifting from preventing mortality to improving the general wellbeing and preventing morbidity. These changes require integration of paediatric HIV care into routine treatment and preventative services, and the management of HIV to be similar to other chronic medical illness. In this chapter we explore the non-ART management of HIV infected children.
