Abstract

Critical care services provide care, monitoring, and therapeutic interventions to patients with life-threatening conditions or injuries and complex multi-organ dysfunction in and beyond the intensive care unit (ICU) settings. The ICU is a complex organizational system. Improvement in performance and outcomes depends on the structure and processes of such systems. High-intensity staffing and closed ICU organizational models are associated with improved outcomes. A dedicated ICU physician-led multidisciplinary team that provides collaborative high-quality critical care, the use of evidence-based care and protocols, and multidisciplinary patient and family-centered ICU rounds are key elements for the provision of critical care to seriously ill patients.
