Part of the book series: Rethinking Peace and Conflict Studies ((RCS))

Abstract

This chapter presents a historical synopsis of the case study, the Cyprus question, demonstrating the characteristics and variables found in protracted conflicts as analyzed in the previous chapter. The chapter focuses on the main pivotal events of each major period commencing with the 1960s and the birth of the Republic and ends with the most contemporary developments of the ‘hydrocarbons era’. The aim of the analysis of each period is not to provide a detailed historical account of the conflict; this is neither possible nor desired in the context of this book. The goal is to highlight the importance of the of the social context and the overall conflict environment, which despite its comfortableness it is ridden with conflict-perpetuating routines. Lastly, the chapter presents the main areas of contention between the two conflict parties.

  1. 1.

The term ‘whore of the Mediterranean’ is frequently attributed to the former Greek Prime Minister Constantinos Mitsotakis. However, historians argue that the expression first appeared in a newspaper article written by Panos Kokkas, the editor in chief of the Greek Newspaper, ‘Eleftheria’, April 4, 1965.

The complete EU proposal is as follows for the Protocol 10 is as follows: ‘Adopted by the Commission on 2 March. The Commission set out the terms under which provisions of EU law apply to the demarcation line [Green Line] between the zones in which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus exercises effective control and those in which it does not. As the application of the acquis in the northern part of Cyprus will be suspended pending a settlement of the Cypriot problem, in accordance with Article 1 of Protocol No 10 of the Act of Accession, and as the demarcation line does not constitute an external border, special rules concerning the crossing of the line by persons, goods and services need to be established. The draft, taking account of the particularity of the situation and political sensitivities on the island, covers such issues as the prevention of illegal immigration, customs, food safety, taxation and travel facilities (Commission 2004/145).’ Protocol 10 can be found at http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:12003T/PRO/10:EN:NOT [accessed April 10, 2017].
