Pioneers of Animal Advocacy in the Nineteenth and the Early Twentieth Centuries

Abstract

The nineteenth century witnessed an increasing compassion for animals. In 1824, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the world’s first animal advocacy organisation was founded in England. In 1866, Henry Bergh set up the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Major works on animal advocacy were published, including ‘Animals’ Rights Considered in Relation to Social Progress’ by Henry Stephens Salt. The anti-vivisection movement was at its peak. This fruitful period continues to influence today’s animal advocacy efforts.
