The Police Role in Delinquency Prevention and Control

Juvenile Delinquency

Abstract

Police work with children involves the investigation of complaints initiated by residents of the community or of deviant behavior observed by the officers. Although officers on routine patrol are the most likely to have initial contacts with juvenile offenders, most departments have established juvenile bureaus in which officers with special training handle the complaints and investigations of cases involving juveniles. The decision to take action in police-juvenile encounters is based on the seriousness of the offense; the age, appearance; and attitude; the area in which the alleged offense occurs, and information the police have on the suspected offenders.
