Abstract
Some familiarity with electromagnetism and quantum mechanics is useful for Section 9.2. A background in partial differential equations, see Section 6.3, and boundary value problems is useful but not necessary for the later sections. For the operator theory that we use, the reader is referred to Section 6.4. Ideally, we would have liked to place Section 9.6 after Chapter 10. But since it belongs to the present chapter, we ask the reader to consult Chapter 10 for more on Hodge decompositions when needed.
