Predicting Quality of Life (QoL) of Oral Cancer

Improving Outcomes in Oral Cancer

Abstract

Multimodality therapy for surgical treatment of oral cancer is aimed to cure and restore patients in order to maintain a functional life. For head and neck surgeons that perform ablative and reconstructive surgery, this may include the considerations for disease-free survival (DFS), esthetics, dental and maxillofacial rehabilitation, speech, and swallowing. The ability to predict the patient’s quality of life (QoL) allows the surgeon as well as the multidisciplinary care team to conduct candid discussions, set realistic expectations, and allow informed treatment decisions to be made by the patient in their best interest. The aim of this chapter is to review the literature and highlight the evidence-based predictors of QoL influencing the oral cancer patient.
