Abstract
Authenticity is a critical component to moving from faculty to leadership. Being authentically you, despite feedback that others may give you at times is essential to long-term success. This chapter gives a brief history of my journey to a deanship with a focus on authenticity. Included are several lessons learned: how to manage time, the necessity of trust, letting go, how to recharge, and the importance of facilitating others’ accomplishments. The chapter also lays out two great university management principles, centralization and decentralization. The chapter ends with advice for those embarking on the leadership journey: lead by example, learn to communicate, accept leadership when it is offered, and champion the things that you really care about.
