Abstract
In this chapter, Alexandrowicz summons the work of Pierre Bourdieu in order to analyse the social matrix within which a complex set of practices regarding sex and gender unfolds. A number of gender-producing phenomena are considered, including the current North American fetish for using pink and blue to identify the sex of babies and young children, the ‘Princess’ phenomenon, the effects of video games, and the obsession with muscularity among young men.
