Abstract

This chapter focuses on eight pioneers – Hippocrates, Osiander, Esquirol, Marcé, v. Krafft-Ebing, Tardieu, Main and Douglas – who have laid the foundations of our knowledge of the psychiatry of motherhood and the development of the speciality of mother-infant (perinatal) psychiatry. The chapter stresses the value of clinical observation, thorough interviewing and long-term studies.
