Abstract

Nearly 200 Italian Carabinieri enlisted as pilots in the Army and Navy Flying Corps during the First World War. Many of them were awarded the Medal for Military Bravery and some were either killed in action or died as a result of technical failures and crashes. Although their careers contributed to the myth of flying aces, only a few came from cavalry ranks and most were drawn from simple walks of life. Yet all of them were able to perform their tasks with remarkable efficiency under all circumstances of war, including winter flights and air combats over the Italian Alps in freezing conditions.
