Abstract

The craft of translation can take many forms—from one language to another, or more generally from one medium to another. The writing and publication of An tOileánach coincided with the emergence of the Irish state from many centuries under British rule. This chapter begins with the “translation” of the Irish landscape of An tOileánach into visual images by the artist Maria Simonds-Gooding for the second Irish-language edition. Nic Craith subsequently explores the translation of the book from Irish into English, raising questions regarding power relationships between the two languages. While the translation of the memoir into English introduced the work to a large English-speaking audience, it also had implications for conceptual mapping and the development of a sense of place.
