Abstract
We present a case of toxic polyneuropathy induced by the exposure to leather cements in shoe industries. A nerve biopsy showed the presence of “giant axons” similar to hereditary giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) caused by recessive mutations in the GAN gene encoding gigaxonin. Similar case reports in the literature suggest that it is due to chronic intoxication of n-hexane found in the cements used in the shoe manufacturing process. The neuropathy symptoms in our patient significantly improved after discontinuing the exposure.
