Abstract

Luxury has existed since humans showed signs of life on planet Earth, even before the obvious accumulation of wealth. It manifested itself in adornments and celebrations, being apparently superfluous and, yet, without it, human life seems to lose its meaning nor be worth living. In this sense, luxury is a phenomenon that is deserving of our attention and helps us to understand human beings through their transcendence. Since its origin, Luxury fashion has had an emotional basis and, at the same time, it is an expression of the dialogues between the “self” and “others”. Therefore, in this book we suggest an discerning reflection on the relationship between these two aspects with a view to contributing to a deeper understanding of luxury fashion.

Notes

  1. 1.

Beebe (2010, p. 812) defines a “society’s sumptuary code as its system of consumption practices, akin to a language (or at least a set of dialects), by which individuals in the society signal through their consumption their differences from and similarities to others. Laws that seek to control and preserve this code are sumptuary laws”. The sumptuary laws originated in Republican Imperial Rome.
