Abstract
Permanent or temporary intestinal diversion is necessary in the management of a number of colon and rectal disorders. This chapter will cover basic indications for stoma formation and considerations relating to choice of stoma and will review operative setup and approach for the most commonly created ostomies with an additional focus on minimally invasive approach to stoma formation. It will then review best pouching practices, common pitfalls and difficult scenarios, and outcomes including quality of life (QoL).
