Abstract

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an endoscopic technique developed to allow access to the pancreaticobiliary system. Many individuals have contributed to the development of ERCP into the diagnostic and therapeutic tool that it is today. With the development of better imaging modalities, the indications for strictly diagnostic ERCP are shrinking; however, ERCP techniques are used for a widening variety of therapeutic interventions. Indications for ERCP range from treatment of benign conditions such as choledocholithiasis and sphincter of Oddi dysfunction to treatment of malignant strictures and advanced techniques such as radiofrequency ablation. Careful patient selection and technique is necessary to minimize the risk profile of the procedure. Those performing ERCP should be aware of the risks and complications as well as their treatment. Techniques utilizing ERCP will likely continue to expand in the future, making it a useful minimally invasive tool for the treatment of many diseases of patients.
