Abstract
Dermabrasion is a widely used method for skin resurfacing (Surowitz and Shockley, Plast Surg Clin North Am. 19:517–25, 2011), which is frequently employed for revision of unsightly scars (Zisser et al., J Am Acad Dermatol. 33:105–6, 1995), facial rejuvenation (Farrior, Laryngoscope 95:534–45, 1985), or in the treatment of conditions such as rhinophyma (Ferneini et al., Conn Med 78:159–60, 2014), or benign growths (Lawrence et al., Dermatol Surg 26:95–101, 2000). Mechanical abrasion involves the use of a handheld, powered tool such as a wire brush or a diamond fraise in order to remove the outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, as well as a less significant portion of the underlying dermis (Surowitz and Shockley, Plast Surg Clin North Am. 19:517–25, 2011). This chapter will discuss indications for dermabrasion, patient selection, pre-procedural considerations, procedural technique, and post-procedure care.
