Abstract

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is an emerging form of food allergy that poses significant personal and familial challenges for patients and caregivers before and after diagnosis. The International FPIES Association was founded by Fallon Schultz Matney in 2011 to raise awareness of FPIES among medical providers at a global level, establish guidelines for its diagnosis and management, increase understanding through research, support advocacy efforts such as coverage for medical nutrition, and offer caregiver information and support at every stage. The organization’s accomplishments include the approval of an ICD-10 code specific to FPIES, the publication of the first international consensus guidelines for FPIES, passage of a resolution by the US Congress declaring a National FPIES Awareness Day, and support of groundbreaking research on quality of life, pathophysiology, and genetics.
