The Design of a WebGL-Based 3D Virtual Roaming System for the “Batu Hitam” Shipwreck

Abstract

This paper details a practical project which we developed to explore the approaches to designing for the storytelling of the virtual reality systems related to cultural heritage. We reconstructed the “Batu Hitam” shipwreck and the cultural items it carried. Then we designed a WebGL-based 3D virtual roaming system applied to PCs. Users can interact with the ship (zoom in/out, rotate, and explode) in this system or board the ship and walk around. For the fluency of storytelling, we designed and rationally arranged nine virtual scenarios composed of animated virtual characters and cultural items, providing an ideal path for visitors. We also use multimedia (text, image, audio, and video) to provide immersive experiences. The system shows the history and structure of the ship as well as life on board. This work suggests that interactivity, fluency, and immersion contribute to the storytelling of the virtual reality systems related to cultural heritage.
