Abstract
This chapter delineates the context-sensitive frame of analysis utilised to interrogate the EU’s CSDP identity. Against a backdrop of linguistic and practice turns I argue for an approach that combines the valuable insights of both. The telling and acting frame—meaning in use—nuances the subject matter of the EU’s missions as it sheds light on the Union’s expressive realm, that is to say, how the EU speaks and acts peace. The second analytical move introduced is the idea that dialogue is the cardinal logic for understanding identity. The key argument here is that identity should be studied in dialogue with the contextual dynamics and the multiple others. Finally, the interpretivist logic that undergirds this work is presented.
