Abstract
Starting from the US driven endeavour for reconstruction in the aftermath of WWII and stretching to the shaping of the country’s European course up to the present, this chapter explores the evolving image of Greece in the eyes of her Western allies, focusing on American and French perceptions. Building on diplomatic accounts, intelligence and social science research material, as well as on political discourse, it traces the constitutive elements of the image of Greece. The first part of the chapter discusses the ambiguous perception of Greece by American officials involved in the Marshall Plan, while the second reconstructs her perception, as crystallized in the discourse of foreign statesmen who visited the country on official occasions.
