The Roads to Congress 2018

Abstract

This chapter investigates President Trump’s effect on the electoral fortunes of House Republicans in the 2018 midterm elections. It focuses on candidates President Trump endorsed on Twitter, the 25 Republican candidates who ran for election in districts that Hillary Clinton won in 2016, and the 11 Democratic candidates who ran for election in districts that President Trump won in 2016. In addition, it also explores vote swings in House districts between 2016 and 2018.

The president’s claim about Barr’s polling numbers is a bit suspect as only one public poll taken between August and November 2018 showed Barr behind in the race, and that poll was taken by a Democratic leaning polling organization.
