Abstract
What is the gradual development of a sense of sensibility towards the self through history? With the emergence of self-consciousness during the Renaissance and the importance of the distinction that Luther drew between the inner and external life of the individual, a space opened up that allowed for the possibility of the self-authorisation of the self. What consequences follow for the relationship of the self to modern conceptions of subjectivity?

Hume, of course, also creates problems for any straightforward understanding of the self, arguing that there is no one site or thing that the self is. See most obviously An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1748).
