Microorganisms in Saline Environments: Strategies and Functions

Part of the book series: Soil Biology ((SOILBIOL,volume 56))

Abstract

Salinization of soil is one of the major constrains to food security. Salt deposition in the soil is a natural process; however, anthropogenic activities such as improper agricultural practices, poor drainage system, and inefficient water management have hastened the process of salinization. The increase in areas under salinity is coupled with the exponentially growing human population posing a huge challenge to mankind to ensure food security. It is therefore the need of the hour to reclaim these saline areas as well as improve the plant’s ability to resist soil salinity. Many methods have been developed to desalinize the soils, such as leaching, growing halophytes, subsurface drainage, biomimicry, etc. This chapter deals with various strategies that are used for desalinization and also identifies the challenges in the application of these techniques.
