Abstract

The congress to discuss the land issue was called on April 10, 1903. The congress was to be attended by two representatives from each village. The agents responsible for allotments in Yorkton and Swan River were also invited to provide detailed explanations about the conditions on which the land was provided and what was required. These were their explanations.

Notes

  1. 1.

Svobodnik, Svobodniki in plural (otherwise known as Freedomite, or the Sons of Freedom), from the Russian word “svoboda” (freedom), are a radical group who split from Doukhobors during the Yorkton march of protest in 1902 and subsequent events in Saskatchewan. After the resettlement of most Doukhobors to BC in the early twentieth century, Svobodniki were active in BC with protest actions against the government and other Doukhobor groups until the late 1960s. The Canadian government reacted to their protests by building two prisons for Svobodniki and incarcerating them in these prisons, initiating raids on Svobodniki villages and taking away children who did not attend schools from their families and placing them in juvenile detention facilities or reform schools.

  2. 2.

Liman means “a river delta.” It was the name of one of the Doukhobor villages in the Molochnaia river settlement (before the events described in this book). There is no record of “Liman” village in Saskatchewan, but besides the north and the south regions of Doukhobor settlements, there was also Devil’s Lake and Saskatchewan colonies (ref. http://www.doukhobor.org/settlements.html). The author probably refers to what is now known as “Saskatchewan” group of Doukhobor colonies in Saskatchewan.
