Abstract
Standardization of definitions for classification of pain terminology helps practitioners and researchers across different specialties to better categorize different pain syndromes. It is important to maintain this taxonomy for reasons of consistency, epidemiology, etiology, prognosis, and treatment. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) has published a list of standardized pain definitions beginning in 1979 with the most recent revision in 2011. It is important to note that this coding schema differs from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10).
