Abstract

In “The Power of Film: Grassroots Activism in Ousmane Sembène’s Moolaadé”, Bisschoff analyses how the acclaimed Senegalese director’s groundbreaking 2004 film Moolaadé reveals in a nuanced and narrative fashion the violence of female genital mutilation (FGM). For Bisschoff, this film has considerable educational power. Through memorable drama, Moolaadé shows the agonizing effects of FGM, the contested nature of the practice, the tensions it provokes between generations and genders, as well as the ways in which grassroots activism can challenge violent and harmful practices, while also recognizing FGM’s cultural weight and embeddedness.
