School Violence in International Contexts

Abstract

This chapter presents a mixed-methods study on the perception of school safety upgrades and protocols in a suburban school district in the United States. The study examined how parents, teachers, and support staff viewed the relationship between the perceptions of safety in regard to various school safety options. Quantitative data were collected to determine which protocols and/or safety upgrades were viewed as essential, effective, and positive or negative. To delve deeper into the perceptions, qualitative data were collected in a series of focus group sessions. The mixed-methods approach allowed the researcher to identify themes but also uncover strategies and protocols that were not expected. The study offers 17 recommendations that school leaders should consider as they develop their safety plan.
