Experimental Investigation of Crack for Tensile Loading Condition by Using Hole Drilling Method

Abstract

The most common method for preventing cracks from propagating is to make a drill stop or crack arrest hole (CAH) at a distance from the crack tip. The objective of drilling a hole is to reduce the stress concentration at the crack tip. This repair method is called a stop drilling procedure. In this paper, the following situations are studied: (i) changing the ratio of crack length (a) to width (w) of specimen for different arrangements, (ii) a single hole with fixed diameter drilled at a varying distance (r) from the crack tip in the crack direction and (iii) drilling a hole with varying diameter (d) at a distance (r) from crack tip in the crack direction. The aim of present work is to obtain an efficient position and diameter of stop drill to reduce the stress concentration factor at the crack tip.
