Abstract

Having a keen observation on the practice followed by local small-scale machine shops, it was seen that the metal scrap in the form of machining chips was directly dumped into regular garbage instead of recycling it. This action, however, was justified by the shops on grounds of economy considering low yield, far off located recycling plants and higher transportation costs. Additionally, the machining chips also hampered the proper recycling of the otherwise degradable regular community garbage. Considering all this, a solution emerged to lay-off the metal scrap by using it as fibers along with resin so as to form metal scrap composites. The current research undertakes to manufacture of different variants of composites by incorporating turning and milling chips as fibers along with a variation of the percentage of fibers and is further followed by mechanical testing of the same.
